The 10km CSB run was one of the most unfortunate incidents whereby planning and force prep did not prepare us for the weather which turned hazy; hence the re-run on 01 nov to replace the run that was cancelled halfway. Nevertheless, it was a learning point to remember that not everything is smooth-sailing, but as long as our force prep is done proper, most activities should proceed well.
10km is nothing too hard for those who like running. As for whatever Haniel said to CO, I don't find fault with it. Afterall, the “Flying Dutchman” said over the radio that perfectionists find themselves with decreased life expectancy by 51% due to the tremendous stress incurred during the course of work. Just imagine a person who's supposed to live til the age of 90 and end up having half of that life cut off. There are times we must work hard and there are times we should not because it is unreasonable to do so. Eventually, what is recognised in society isn't people's hard work alone, but a combination of hard work, talent and good fortune.
The week before grandslam was packed with preparatory runs, and there was an SOC on 21 oct on the day after the 8km run. Despite the long distances covered by foot, I managed to pass the SOC thanks to my fellow bunkmates who ran with me for the final rundown. Hence, I have managed to clear the veto factor for ASLC.
Next up, I would need to combat the 32km CSB route march, as well as to attain 8 chin ups in order to get a silver for IPPT to get the CSB. I intend to take things a step at a time and try not to stress myself out too much. My father told me to take things easy anyway so I don't want to put unnecessary trouble or stress upon myself. I'm quite frail, honestly. It is a miracle that I've survived this far. Oh and if you don't know who's my father yet, you can look for MSG Asrul or 2WO Yeo Siong. Our 2IC, 1WO Gilbert Chew is also his good friend but I haven't told him about my father yet. I also learnt that 1WO Chew was previously from MI Battalion.
Grandslam week was quite a challenge for me. I screwed up over things like the ambush patrol and the trek up and down the slopes leading to the FUP for the 3rd mission. The low morale really hurt me quite deeply resulting in me making stupid decisions and not thinking through actions. I need to have more combat endurance in order to survive the Taiwan missions so that I can perform well and graduate from ASLC. Perhaps more Pocari Sweat will do the trick? On the other hand, the most enjoyable event was the Chinook ride from Marsling to Yishun, when the chopper toured the skies bordering between the Woodlands area and Johor Baru. The HDB flats looked like dominoes from above.
The buddy system is important... really.
For the 7 Core Values,
There's no need to comment on Loyalty to Country since it is a given. For Leadership and Professionalism, it is something that I need to work very hard on to earn the respect of people around me. I work in a way to try my best not to agitate others, though sometimes I realised that people turn into devils in order to make discipline standards go up. I'll need to find a balance between the two. Core skills must be mastered in good time to be professional about things in the infantry. I don't know how to exactly define my Fighting Spirit since it weighs on many factors, physical or notwithstanding. I didn't fall out of the remainder of the activities, so I guess I'm still fit to go for the rest of the missions. I don't sabotage others over my failures, so maybe that's the ethics part. Looking out for others' welfare is part and parcel of me already; giving my bunkmates water, drinks and whatnot, I do my best to keep them going even if I falter. Often I witness other people covering up their own backsides and being selfish rather than helping out those who are frail and in need; that is something I would like to change for the people around me.
Overall, I have an urgent need to learn more skills before POP. As for the activities themselves, well, most of it is over and will be tested again in Taiwan, so until then.
