Dragon Crisis! EP 01 to 03 Plot Summary: A normal high school boy Kisaragi Ryuji's peaceful life is turned into an adventure by the return of his second cousin Eriko. Ryuji and Eriko seize a relic box from a black broker. In the box, they find a red dragon girl Rose. In order to protect Rose from the black organization, Ryuji decides to fight using his power as a relic handler. Later on, Tokura, a researcher at the Society takes an interest with investigating Rose, but not for long before a young man in black comes to take her away. Determined to rescue Rose, Ryuji takes possession of a powerful Lost Precious left to him by his parents. After storming Fang's stronghold with Eriko and Tokura, Ryuji finds that Onyx, the Black Dragon is more than he can handle by himself, until Rose joins forces with him to confront the enemy.
Once again, what has been said about the anime for the past year and this remains pretty much solid; loads of recycled similarities, characters and habits. Episode 1 pretty much reminded me of C.C. from Code Geass, or Rose in Dragon Crisis when she hatched from the egg / box and instantly fell to a strong liking with the main character. The "tsun" head-biting action also bears resemblance to any "tsun" Index (Dedicatus545) and Touma scene. Looking past the first similar factor, one may find few distinctly different material that yearns good viewership.
Adapted from light novels and no manga illustrations thus far, Dragon Crisis has been published since 2007, written for a “seinen” audience. The director, Tachibana Hideki, only has experience from H2O, but he made the first episode of Dragon Crisis look pretty, with interesting cinematography, and a packed story, taking the viewer for a surprise ride like any other "first episode".
Taiga, or Rose, is an ultimately primitive loli conquered tsundere, who mainly screams “Ryuuji” like the purest of all loli tsundere. To simply put, combine Shana and Taiga and you get Rose. And who better to voice her than Kugimiya Rie? This role wasn’t just made for her, it IS her. The relationships between characters are stupidly common, and after watching so much anime, it is getting annoying to keep seeing the same formula over and over.
The good thing is, the story is fast, interesting, but slightly nonsensical. Not as plot-dense as something as Code Geass, though. To sum it up, “girl falls into protagonist’s lap and makes his life way better than mine”. The fact that Dragons evolve from human to dragon is silly, but the pacing was proper, wrapping it all up with a nice cliffhanger.
Animation is DEEN-quality, with a ton of inconsistencies. Even so, this is probably one of Studio Deen’s best work, but it pales compared to studios like J.C. Staff. Oddly, Dragon Crisis has a plot that seems like what J.C. Staff would do, and Deen did pull some of the seiyuu you’d see if it were a J.C. production, those being Kugimiya Rie and Horie Yui. Also, fantastic soundtrack.
This is a fun show, surely not a must watch by any means, but it doesn’t deserve to be ignored. Besides Deen’s lack of perfection in animation, Dragon Crisis surpasses mediocre for me, purely due to the execution. Back to the age old question, graphics over story, or story over graphics?
