Episode 05 Yumekui Merry

Merry's friendship with Yumeji has grown from a battle ally to playing console games together, somewhat alike Index and Touma. After Yumeji receives a shopping list, he heads out to the supermarket with Merry, and Merry recounts some memories of what her life was 10 years ago.

The shopping trip ends with a smile on Merry's face that bears a striking resemblance to Misaka Mikoto's shy-ish smile in To Aru Kagaku no Railgun OVA, possibly because the same studio is involved.

Later, Merry accidentally bumps into Yui and somehow causes Yumeji to get an upskirt view and a painful slap.

When Merry runs off following Yumeji, they enter a Daydream once again, and a battle with the evil dreamworld monster that has been harrassing Yui begins.

Past halfway, Merry gets tricked and is almost killed, when Yumeji executes his Touma-esque move, but ends up getting injured instead.

In short, this episode bears quite a number of similarities with episode 04, except that there's development in the relationship factor as well as a little more revelation on Merry's past. Pretty much slower pacing than the past few episodes. The battle scene is much better animated now that we can see the full sequence, instead of it being way too zoomed in. As usual, the soundtrack is superb and never fails to impress; it should rank highly this season. Well, that's about it for episode 5 of Yumekui Merry. Episode 5 of Madoka is also out again today...
