Yumekui Merry 夢喰いメリー (Dreameater Merry) EP 1 Plot Summary: Ten years ago Fujiwara noticed he had a power to see multicolored auras surrounding the person's body. Ever since then he's been having a weird dream about a war with cats. Then one day a mysterious girl falls on top of him... Yumekui Merry starts off as a sort of deviation from Shakugan no Shana; Merry is a "magical girl" that apparently fell out of a dream world and likely will team up with the standard JC Staff inoffensive male lead, Yumeji, to help battle the evil Fuzetsu unleashing Cat army. Just kidding on the last part.
Apart from Merry’s apparent Touhou-nesque, the artwork shines a lot more when it’s set against the dreamworld that is portrayed with a darker and sinister look. Oku Keiichi is in charge of music for this series and he does his job really well, and you can really feel the tense sensation in the air between the characters, especially for the battle scenes. Sadly, the animation for first fight scenes were not as promising; the close-up angles made it tough to follow through the fight sequence.
Yamauchi Shigeyasu is kind of a weird director. For the plot, the premise isn’t as dark as Shana, but supernatural fighting girl, in-between fighting world, average male with a unique power… you can check off similar checkboxes. In this case, Merry seems to be wrenched between Shana and Index in terms of plot quality. But otherwise, the characters are all pleasant to look at and listen too. The dialogue is natural, lively, without being over the top. Just a lot of feel-good vibes from all the characters thus far.
Yumekui Merry has set up a fairly interesting world, but its quality overall will depend on how things unfold in the next couple episodes. If it turns into the typical JC Staff supernatural slice of life, then the unannounced season 3 of Shana would be more worth watching, but if they go down the less-expected darker route with more action and battles, it could turn out to be a nice sleeper hit.
OP: "Daydream Syndrome" by Marina Fujiwara.
ED: "Dreams and Hopes and the Me of Tomorrow" by Ayane Sakura (Merry's voice actor).
